Challenge
Transition to cloud computing away from obsolete in house servers

Background
Long established law firm based in San Diego found itself tangled in a web of intricate internal server infrastructure that had developed over many years. Client’s existing technology system was outdated, inefficient, and expensive to operate.   
Client’s on prem hardware based phone system also needed an update.  For example, their old phone system was unable to support client’s desire to allow employees and associates to work efficiently from home.

 

Solution
Goals for this client’s cloud transition included: improved efficiency, reliability, and ability for users to securely work from remote locations, including work from employee and partner home offices.    Client knew “there had to be a better way” to meet their technology systems, and after speaking to a couple of our other clients we had completed similar cloud transitions for, they knew we could help them too.  To assist this client, our first step was to create a  list of the client’s technology workloads.    Like most businesses, there are the usual workloads such as: email, document storage, and accounting – then as a law firm, the client’s specialized workloads included: time billing, legal forms software, and research platforms such as Lexis. With the client’s workload inventory in hand, we dialogued with client stake holders for each workload, to gather client feedback on the good and bad aspects of their existing technology solutions.    Using the information gathered, we offered a cloud based setup recommendation for the client to consider as a improved replacement for each workload.    Each recommendation included a cost range to implement, and other details such as the monthly service cost from the application or hosting provider, along with other comments.     We refined and adjusted the our recommendations as needed, then after client desired solutions were identified, we wrote a scope document to accomplish the transition to the cloud. 

Outcome
This client started their migration to the cloud as part of their long term plan to wind down their large traditional office, and operate out of a shared office workspace.     
Results of the project include: 

  • Decreased IT support costs 

  • Ability to work from anywhere, without frequent “VPN problems” which had been a plague in the past 

  • Reduced risk of data loss, especially from potential causes such as a fire or other damage to their office.
